How many hashtags should you use in 2026?

Hashtag strategy has changed a lot. Platforms now rely on AI to understand your content, and hashtags act mainly as topic labels rather than reach multipliers. Fewer, more relevant tags beat long lists of generic ones:

PlatformRecommendedNotes
Instagram3–5Instagram has moved to a limit of about 5 hashtags per post, and Meta recommends a few highly relevant tags
TikTok3–5Mix one trending tag with specific ones. Keywords in captions and speech matter more
YouTube2–3The first 3 show above the title. More than 15 and YouTube ignores all of them
LinkedIn3–5Use professional, industry tags at the end of the post
X (Twitter)1–2More than two reduces engagement and wastes characters
Facebook1–3Hashtags have little effect. Use them for campaigns or branded tags
Pinterest2–5Keywords in the pin title and description matter far more

Need more for a specific use (for example, a comment with extra tags or an older workflow)? Drag the slider up to 30.

The winning mix: broad + community + niche

Huge tags like #love or #food have hundreds of millions of posts. Your post is buried within seconds. Tiny tags nobody follows give you no reach at all. The sweet spot is a pyramid:

  1. 1 broad tag to label the general topic (e.g. #fitness).
  2. 2–3 community or niche tags where your post can actually stay visible (e.g. #homeworkout, #fitover40).
  3. 1 local or brand tag to reach nearby customers and build a searchable library of your content (e.g. #chennaifitness, #yourbrand).

Our generator builds exactly this balance for each platform automatically.

Hashtag do’s and don’ts

  • ✅ Be relevant. Every tag should describe what’s actually in the post.
  • ✅ Use CamelCase for multi-word tags (#SmallBusinessTips). It’s easier to read and friendlier to screen readers.
  • ✅ Rotate your sets. Posting the identical block every time can look spammy.
  • ❌ Don’t use banned or broken tags. Our library avoids tags Instagram is known to restrict.
  • ❌ Don’t use engagement bait like #follow4follow or #like4like. It attracts bots, not customers.
📍

Local businesses: add your city in the location box. Local tags like #chennaifoodie or #bangalorefoodies reach people who can actually visit you, and they’re far less competitive than global tags.

Frequently asked questions

Do hashtags still work on Instagram?

Yes, but differently. They help Instagram categorise your post and can surface it in hashtag search. Instagram’s ranking now depends far more on content quality, watch time, shares and saves. Use a few highly relevant tags rather than a wall of 30.

Where does this tool get its hashtags?

From a hand-curated library covering 28 popular niches, including India-specific ones, organised by reach level. We add custom tags generated from your own topic, location and brand. We don’t show fake “post counts”. Check live numbers in each app’s search if you need them.

Should hashtags go in the caption or the first comment?

Instagram has confirmed there’s no difference in reach. The caption is simpler, and it keeps your tags attached if you later edit or share the post.

Can I use the same hashtags on every post?

Keep your brand and core tags consistent, but rotate the rest so each set matches the specific post. Click “Shuffle” for a fresh variation.
