    What are meta tags?

Meta tags are short snippets of HTML in your page’s <head>. Visitors don’t see them on the page, but search engines and social networks read them to decide what your page is about and how to display it. Good meta tags don’t directly push you up the rankings. They win the click, and a higher click-through rate means more traffic from the same position.

The tags that actually matter in 2026

    TagWhat it doesBest practice
<title>The blue headline in Google and the browser tab text50–60 chars (under ~600px), keyword first, brand last
meta descriptionThe grey snippet under the title120–158 chars, a benefit plus a call to action
link rel="canonical"Tells Google the “main” URL when duplicates existAbsolute https:// URL, one per page
meta robotsAllow or stop indexing and link-followingLeave indexable unless the page is private or thin
og:title / og:imageHow your link looks on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and Slack1200×630px image, under 5MB, absolute URL
twitter:cardCard style on Xsummary_large_image for a big image preview
meta viewportMakes the page render correctly on phonesAlways include it (Google indexes mobile-first)

What about meta keywords? Google has ignored the keywords tag since 2009, and Bing treats it as a possible spam signal. We include it only if you fill it in.

Why we measure pixels, not just characters

Google doesn’t cut titles at a fixed number of characters. It cuts them when they run out of space, about 600 pixels on desktop. A title full of wide letters (“WWW MMM”) gets truncated much sooner than one with narrow letters (“fill it in”). Our generator measures your title in the same font Google uses and shows exactly where the “…” will appear.

Writing a meta description that gets clicks

    1. Match the search intent. Say plainly what the page gives the searcher: a price, a guide, a download, a booking.
    2. Include the keyword naturally. Google bolds words that match the query, which draws the eye.
    3. Add a differentiator: free shipping, 24/7 support, “updated for 2026”, a star rating, or a local area.
    4. End with an action: “Compare plans”, “Get a free quote”, “See the full list”.
    🔎

Google rewrites many meta descriptions when it thinks another part of the page answers the query better. Writing a clear, specific description that matches the page content greatly increases the chance yours is shown.

    Testing your social preview

After publishing, you can refresh the cached preview with the Facebook Sharing Debugger and the LinkedIn Post Inspector. WhatsApp and X read the same Open Graph tags, so one good set of tags covers every network.

    Frequently asked questions

Where do I paste the generated meta tags?

Inside the <head> section of your page, before </head>. On WordPress, use your SEO plugin’s fields (Yoast, Rank Math) for the title and description rather than editing theme files. On Shopify, use “Search engine listing preview” on each page.

How long should a title tag be?

Aim for 50–60 characters, or more precisely under about 600 pixels. Our live pixel meter shows exactly when Google will start cutting it off.

What size should my Open Graph image be?

1200 × 630 pixels (1.91:1 ratio) works everywhere: Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and X large cards. Keep important text away from the edges and the file under 5MB.

Do meta tags improve my Google ranking?

The title tag is a relevance signal. The description isn’t a ranking factor, but it strongly affects click-through rate. Well-written tags bring more visitors from the same ranking position.

Why isn’t Facebook showing my new image?

Facebook caches link previews. Paste your URL into the Facebook Sharing Debugger and click “Scrape Again”. Also make sure og:image is an absolute https:// URL that’s publicly accessible.
