How to create an invoice in 4 steps
- Add your details. Upload your logo, then enter your business name, address and GSTIN in “From”. These are remembered for your next invoice.
- Add your client in “Bill to”, including their GSTIN if they’re GST-registered (they’ll need it to claim input tax credit).
- List items or services with quantity, rate and GST %. Turn on the HSN/SAC column if you need it. Totals, tax split and amount in words update instantly.
- Download the PDF and send it to your client. Click “New invoice” next time and the number increases automatically.
What must a GST tax invoice include?
Under Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, a tax invoice issued by a registered business in India must show:
- Supplier’s name, address and GSTIN
- A unique, consecutive invoice number (max 16 characters) and the date of issue
- Recipient’s name, address and GSTIN (if registered)
- HSN code for goods or SAC code for services (4 or 6 digits, depending on turnover)
- Description, quantity, unit, value and any discount
- Taxable value, GST rate and amounts of CGST, SGST/UTGST or IGST
- Place of supply with state name (for inter-state supplies)
- Signature or digital signature of the supplier or authorised representative
Our template includes all of these fields. If you aren’t GST-registered, set Tax to “No tax” and change the title to “INVOICE”. Don’t label it a “Tax invoice” or charge GST.
CGST + SGST or IGST?
If you and your client are in the same state, charge CGST and SGST (half the rate each). If they’re in a different state, charge IGST at the full rate. Choose the right option in the “Tax” menu and the invoice updates the breakdown automatically, grouped by rate if your items use different GST rates.
How discounts are taxed
A discount shown on the invoice at the time of supply reduces the taxable value, so GST is charged on the discounted amount. When you add an invoice-level discount, our generator spreads it proportionally across your items before calculating tax, which is the correct treatment. Shipping or delivery charges you add are shown separately below the tax.
Private by design. Invoices contain sensitive business and client details. Unlike many free invoice tools, nothing you type here is uploaded to a server. It’s saved only in your own browser, and the PDF is created on your device.
Invoice tips that get you paid faster
- Set a clear due date (for example, 15 days) instead of “on receipt”.
- Add UPI and bank details in Payment details so the client can pay in one step.
- Itemise your work. Clients question vague single-line invoices more often.
- Follow up politely on the due date, and include the invoice number in every message.
