How to Set Up WordPress Visual Regression Testing with SiteSuraksha

By Fathima Nourin TM • •

A WordPress update can return an HTTP 200 status code while still breaking your website layout. CSS styling conflicts can hide add-to-cart buttons, displace menus, or break mobile headers.

SiteSuraksha uses automated visual regression testing. It takes screenshots before and after every update to detect layout regressions before customers see them.

How Visual Regression Testing Works

Visual regression testing compares visual pixel structures across two versions of a webpage:

  1. Baseline Screenshot: SiteSuraksha renders selected URLs on headless browser instances (Desktop, Tablet, Mobile) and captures full-page snapshots.
  2. Apply Update: The system applies the selected plugin or theme update in an isolated environment.
  3. Comparison Screenshot: SiteSuraksha renders the same URLs again under identical viewport dimensions.
  4. Pixel Diff Analysis: The engine compares image data. If visual differences exceed the defined tolerance threshold (e.g. 0.5%), SiteSuraksha flags the change.

Critical Pages You Must Monitor

Configure visual regression on your high-conversion pages:

  • Homepage: Protect brand presentation and hero elements.
  • Product and Pricing Pages: Ensure buy buttons and pricing tables stay intact.
  • Cart and Checkout: Confirm form fields and payment gateways display cleanly.
  • Lead Contact Forms: Verify form inputs and submit buttons remain visible.

Configuring Visual Testing in SiteSuraksha

Step 1: Add Critical URLs

Go to Updates → Visual Regression in your SiteSuraksha portal. Enter the key URLs for your website.

Step 2: Set Diff Sensitivity

Choose your tolerance level. For static landing pages, choose strict 0.2% variance. For dynamic pages with rotating banners, choose 1.0% or mask dynamic CSS selectors.

Step 3: Run Safe Auto-Updates

When AutoPilot updates your plugins, it runs visual regression automatically. If the checkout page breaks, SiteSuraksha rolls back the update immediately and alerts your team.
