How to Force HTTPS on Your WordPress Site: 3 Methods

In today’s digital landscape, website security is no longer optional—it is a fundamental requirement. If your WordPress site is still loading over HTTP, you are exposing your visitors to potential security risks and damaging your search engine rankings. Transitioning to HTTPS encrypts data transmitted between your users and your server, building essential trust and credibility.

At SiteSuraksha, we prioritize robust web security and seamless maintenance. In this guide, we will walk you through three effective methods to force HTTPS on your WordPress website and secure your digital presence.

Why Forcing HTTPS Matters

Before diving into the methods, it is crucial to understand why switching to HTTPS is vital. Without an SSL certificate and properly configured HTTPS redirection:

  • Browsers like Google Chrome will flag your site as “Not Secure,” frightening away potential customers.
  • Search engines may penalize your SEO rankings, prioritizing secure competitors.
  • Data intercepted on your site can be easily compromised.

Once you have installed an SSL certificate on your hosting server, use one of the following three methods to force all traffic to use the secure version of your site.

Method 1: Using a WordPress Plugin (Easiest for Beginners)

If you prefer not to touch code, using a dedicated security plugin is the safest route.

  1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Plugins > Add New.
  3. Search for “Really Simple SSL” or a similar reputable HTTPS redirection plugin.
  4. Install and activate the plugin.
  5. Go to the plugin settings and click “Go ahead, activate SSL.”

The plugin will automatically update your site URL settings and handle the redirection for you.

Method 2: Updating WordPress Address Settings

You can manually update your core WordPress settings to default to HTTPS.

  1. From your WordPress dashboard, go to Settings > General.
  2. Locate the WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) fields.
  3. Change http:// to https:// in both fields.
  4. Scroll to the bottom and click Save Changes.

Note: You may be logged out and required to sign in again using your new HTTPS URL.

Method 3: Editing the .htaccess File (Advanced)

For users comfortable with file management, adding a redirection rule directly to your server’s .htaccess file is a clean and efficient method.

  1. Access your hosting account via FTP or your host’s File Manager.
  2. Locate the .htaccess file in your site’s root directory (usually public_html).
  3. Download a backup copy of the file before making any changes.
  4. Open the file and add the following code snippet at the very top:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
  1. Save the file and upload it back to your server.
