Fixing the Attribution Black Hole: Why Indian D2C and SaaS Brands Bleed Ad Spend at Payment Gateways

By Fathima Nourin TM • •

If you run paid campaigns on Meta or Google for an Indian D2C store or SaaS product, you have likely encountered this discrepancy: your ad dashboard reports 120 purchases, your CRM or WooCommerce store shows 85 orders, and your payment gateway logs show 95 successful charges. Somewhere between the ad click, the checkout, and the UPI pin entry, measurement breaks down.

In western markets, customer journeys usually conclude in an inline credit card checkout on the same domain. In India, over 70% of consumer transactions flow through external UPI apps, netbanking portals, or hosted gateway redirects like Razorpay, Cashfree, or PhonePe. That extra redirection loop creates an attribution black hole that leads to misallocated ad spend and inaccurate return on ad spend (ROAS) calculations.

Why Payment Gateways Break Standard Analytics in India

Most standard analytics setups (like basic Google Analytics 4 tags or standard Meta Pixel snippets) depend on uninterrupted client-side sessions in the user’s browser. When an Indian shopper checks out, that session is disrupted in three specific ways:

1. The Cross-Domain Referral Overwrite

When a shopper leaves your WordPress site to complete a payment on api.razorpay.com or a bank’s 3D-Secure page, and is redirected back to your /order-received/ page, browser security policies strip or replace the referrer header. Unless your measurement tool explicitly ignores payment gateway domains in its referral exclusion list, the session resets. The initial traffic source (such as your high-performing Google Search campaign) is discarded, and the conversion is credited to Direct or Referral: api.razorpay.com.

2. UPI App-Switching and In-App Browser Disconnects

On mobile devices, clicking an Instagram or Facebook ad opens your site inside an in-app browser (IAB). When the customer chooses UPI, the operating system shifts context to Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm. If the payment gateway redirects back into Chrome or Safari instead of returning to the original Meta in-app browser instance, cookies and session storage IDs are completely lost. To client-side scripts, the customer returning from the UPI app appears as an entirely new visitor.

3. Unopened Thank-You Pages

Client-side conversion pixels require the buyer to stay on the browser window until your final confirmation page finishes loading. In India, once the UPI PIN is accepted and the SMS alert pings, many users close the tab immediately. The money reaches your merchant account, but the conversion pixel never fires in the user’s browser. The ad algorithm assumes the campaign failed to convert that lead, causing it to under-optimize your best audiences.

How to Fix Attribution Loss on WordPress

Fixing attribution leaks does not require replacing your entire software stack. It requires shifting reliance away from volatile client-side redirects and capturing signals server-side.

1. Persist First-Touch and Last-Touch UTM Parameters at Checkout

Do not rely on the URL parameters remaining intact through payment processing. When a user lands on your site, store their UTM parameters (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, gclid, fbclid) in a secure first-party cookie or local storage. When the user creates an order, attach these values directly to the order metadata in WordPress before redirecting to the payment gateway.

2. Rely on Server-Side Webhooks, Not Browser Redirects

Every major Indian payment provider (Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU, PhonePe) sends automated server-to-server webhooks for events like order.paid or payment.captured. These webhooks arrive reliably regardless of whether the customer closed their browser tab or experienced network drops. By wiring your conversion tracking (Meta Conversions API, Google Enhanced Conversions) to your webhook endpoint, you record 100% of confirmed revenue.

3. Configure Referral Exclusion Lists

In your analytics configuration, add all gateway domains to your unwanted referral list. At minimum, Indian ecommerce setups should filter:

  • api.razorpay.com
  • cashfree.com
  • payu.in
  • phonepe.com
  • Major banking netbanking gateways (e.g., hdfcbank.com, icicibank.com, sbi.co.in)

The Impact on Ad ROI

When attribution data is incomplete, marketing teams routinely scale down campaigns that appear unprofitable on paper, even when those campaigns are driving the bulk of revenue. Closing the payment gateway attribution gap ensures your ad spend algorithms receive accurate signals, lowering customer acquisition costs across competitive channels.
